Are international flights as safe as domestic ones?

When you need to fly internationally, you may wonder if you will be safe. It isn't uncommon for New York residents to question the safety of air travel and to be a little concerned when taking a foreign flight. In fact, USA Today reports that with many new stories on foreign flights crashing, being skeptical is reasonable.

The reality is that using airlines in European countries and other developed nations is usually just as safe as US airlines. Air travel generally is very safe and crashes are rare. However, if you are flying out of a developing nation, then you might have a need to be concerned.

The issues come down to not following safety regulations as closely as they should be. These airlines may not be adhering to regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. It may not be for lack of trying, though. Often the issues lie with not having enough training. Maintenance may not be done as it should. Things may be overlooked. There are also issues with corruption and people being appointed to positions they are not able to properly handle simply because they know the right people.

However, you probably do not have much to worry about. The Federal Aviation Administration is watching out for the good of Americans who fly abroad. Always check with the FAA to see an airline's or country's status. This can help you to know if it is a smart idea to fly with them or not.
