Is air travel really as safe as they say?

You may take flights out of New York regularly or be someone who has never flown before. Regardless of your status, one thing you probably have wondered is about how safe flying is. Everyone has concerns, which is completely understandable seeing how air accidents get a lot of attention. However, what you may not realize is air travel is incredibly safe and the numbers back it up.

According to USA Today, commercial air travel saw its best year ever when it came to safety in 2017. Fatal flights were limited to two regional airlines that were both small in size. The crashes resulted in 13 deaths. In 2016, there were 71 deaths and six fatal accidents, so there was a great improvement. In total, there were 111 accidents in 2017.

It is important to look at the numbers with an understanding of the data, though. While air travel is much safer than many other kinds of travel, such as driving in a car, these numbers do not reflect the industry as a whole. The accidents are only for larger passenger aircraft. They do not include any injuries or deaths in accidents on the ground. They also do not make it clear the severity of accidents or point out situations where planes were lucky to land before an accident happened due to mechanical failure.

It is thought that 2017 is a record-breaking year simply due to good luck and not because it will become the norm. However, safety in air travel is at an all-time high, which still makes it an incredibly safe way to travel. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
