Small plane crashes can be devastating to people in New York and across the country who lose loved ones when a general aviation flight goes down. While private flights can be convenient and entertaining, some may be concerned about whether small general aviation airplanes are maintained as regularly as those operated by large commercial carriers. One serious small plane accident in Billings, Montana, took the lives of four people on Jan. 12, 2020. The small plane, a one-engine Cessna 182, crashed on Dunn Mountain between Billings and Roundup.
Because the crash involved a small private airplane in a rural area, the wreckage was not discovered until the following day along with the bodies of all four people who were on the flight. The National Transportation Safety Board launched an investigation into the causes of the crash, although local officials stated that they viewed the small plane collision as a "tragic accident". The 69-year-old pilot was killed along with all three passengers, men aged 36, 35 and 32. The initial investigators from the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration said that the crash may have been caused by hitting a wire connected to an antenna tower operating public safety radio systems. They said it was possible that the small aircraft collided directly with the 180-foot tower.
After this incident, the plane went down into the side of the mountain. Investigators said that they did not know why the aircraft was flying at such a low altitude as to crash into the mountain ahead, but noted that it was a point for further inquiry.
Victims of airline accidents leave behind many people who love and miss them. People who lost loved ones due to a private airplane accident that was caused by negligence may consult with an attorney about the advisability of pursuing compensation through a wrongful death claim.
