Tips to help ensure survival in an airplane accident

New York residents who fear flying should know that airplane accidents have a 95.7% survivability rate, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. Just in case, though, people can keep some safety tips in mind before getting ready for their next flight.

The first tip regards clothing. People should try not to wear loose-fitting clothing as this can get snagged on jagged edges. The clothes should be made from natural materials, which are not as flammable as synthetic ones. The second and third tips have to do with choosing a seat. One should try to nab a middle seat in the back third of the plane as it has the lowest fatality rate. They should also sit within five rows of an emergency exit.

Carry-on luggage should be placed under the seat in front. This keeps the legs from sliding under the seat and getting caught. If an accident seems imminent, one should take the bracing position, which means leaning forward and keeping one's head close to the seat in front. In the event that an accident does occur, people should hold onto something. A "wreckage rider" has a better chance of surviving a free fall. Last but not least, it could be beneficial to simply pay attention to the pre-flight safety presentation.

People who are injured in a commercial airline accident may want to see a lawyer once they have recovered. That way, they may be able to determine if they have good grounds for a personal injury claim. Filing a lawsuit against a major airline can obviously be a difficult undertaking as the other side will have its own legal team, so victims may want to leave every step to their lawyer.
