Jet planes can be built with design problems

Airplanes and airlines can seem nearly flawless, even if their arrivals and departures are often late. Pilots are always trained professionals and nearly all commercial flights come off without a hitch. But the forces and mechanics involved mean that any one problem can cause a catastrophic failure.

Some issues are due to pilot error or foul weather. Before instrument landing systems, pilots and air traffic controllers had to work hard to make sure collisions and runway misses did not happen. But some issues are related to the construction of an aircraft or its design before anyone tried to put it together.

The beginning of commercial jet travel actually came with its own set of design flaws. The de Havilland Comet, the world's first jetliner, left service after three of them disintegrated in midair. It turns out that the square windows in the cabin caused a structural failure, which is why all modern jet planes have rounded windows.

But lessons like these may be learned too late for some people. New jet designs must be well-tested and qualified before passengers and crews risk their lives in them. Design defects in airplanes may be answered by a lawsuit for financial damages if they result in deaths.

Although money can seem like no comfort after the loss of a loved one, a lawsuit can help protect the survivors of victims in an uncertain future. A suit may also encourage designers and manufacturers of aircraft to prevent future incidents. An attorney can help present this option and its strategies at a difficult time.
